Fathom Consulting and the European Climate Foundation are delighted to preview the findings from our new research on the economics of decarbonising European aviation

Our comprehensive study provides data-driven analysis into how to decarbonise European aviation in the most economically efficient way possible. We consider the options, and how they may affect Europe’s wider policy agenda, such as boosting economic competitiveness and enhancing energy security through the Clean Industrial Deal and Sustainable Transport Investment Plan.

Our research examines the economic costs and benefits of decarbonising European aviation using sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and zero-emission flight (ZEF). Our work outlines the challenges of scaling up SAF production to the levels needed to meet the ReFuel EU Aviation requirements by 2050, and explains why ZEF should play an essential, complementary role.

Our work goes further than other studies by showing how the costs and benefits to both the aviation industry and society at large vary under different scenarios. We show how businesses and policymakers can keep costs down and maximise the economic rewards on offer. We consider these issues through a macroeconomic lens, assessing their wider effect on economic growth, productivity and jobs.

The final report will be released in June 2025. This event will convene policymakers, aviation executives and other key experts to engage with the results before the official release.
